– A building collapsed late night in Lagos while occupants were busy moving their belongings

– The incident was confirmed by the Lagos state government which activated emergency response

– An inhabitant gave details of how the building collapsed and why there were no casualties

It was a narrow escape for some residents of a part of the highly populated Ojuelegba area of Lagos as a two-storey building collapsed late Thursday, October 24.

IREPORTERONLINE understands that the building collapsed at 8.55 pm just 12 days after a similar occurrence involving a three-storey building at Magodo Phase 1 in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-storey building was located at 7, Rufai Street, Ojuelegba, but that no live was lost.

The report quoted some residents as saying that almost all the inhabitants of the affected building had vacated it before the collapse.

However, some of the inhabitants still had their belonging inside the building at the time of the collapse.

The tenants confirmed that the signs of collapse had become noticeable since October 18.

One of the residents, Emeka Anozie, said he noticed the window from the back flat collapse around 7pm and he quickly alerted all the remaining tenants who were busy removing their belongings.

The entire building collapsed few minutes later.

It was further learnt that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had, since March 25, 2019, marked the building and urged residents to quit immediately.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, director-general of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident and said emergency response was mobilised.
