From Captivity To Hope: Chibok’s Brave Daughter Returns Home After Nine Years

In a heartwarming and long-awaited reunion, Rebecca Kabu, a courageous survivor amongst the 277 Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in 2014, was joyfully received by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This remarkable moment, laden with hope and resilience, marks a significant stride in the nation’s ongoing effort to bring back all those who were taken away.

Amidst a solemn gathering, the First Lady, accompanied by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, assured Rebecca of comprehensive medical care and support for her journey back to education. Mrs. Tinubu’s promise extended beyond Rebecca, encompassing the girls still in captivity, underscoring the nation’s collective commitment to their return.

Expressing her gratitude to the National Security Adviser’s office, the National Intelligence Agency, and other security agencies involved in Rebecca’s rescue, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the importance of addressing psychological scars borne by survivors. “Cases of amnesia should be treated; it is difficult to get by, but since you are still here, God has plans for you,” she stated.

Rebecca’s triumphant return to the arms of freedom is an embodiment of hope for the remaining captives. Mrs. Tinubu highlighted her organization, the Renewed Hope Initiative, which is dedicated to facilitating the return of mature girls who were forcibly removed from school, ensuring they receive a robust education.

Tinubu’s commitment extended further, as she pledged to personally support Rebecca’s journey toward healing and empowerment. This endeavor is rooted in the belief that education equips young women with the tools to thrive in society and carry forward the legacy of their predecessors.

Rear Admiral Yaminu Musa, the Coordinator of the Counter Terrorism Centre, NSA, shared that Rebecca’s rescue was a testament to the tireless efforts of government security agencies. Kidnapped at the tender age of 13 and now a resilient 22-year-old, Rebecca was deemed medically and mentally prepared to rejoin her family in Zana village, Borno state.
