Subsidy Removal: Presidency Makes Fresh Announcement On Deployment Of Palliatives

The Presidency has indicated that the Federal Government is prepared to oversee the distribution of palliatives aimed at mitigating the impact of subsidy removal across Nigerian states. Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, conveyed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Friday.

Ngelale emphasized that a mechanism for monitoring, rather than mere checks, is necessary.

To ensure effective oversight, federal regulators are involved and a palliatives distribution system has been established.

The Federal Government had sanctioned the allocation of N5 billion to each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enable them to acquire food items for distribution to their respective populations in need.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State disclosed this after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Subsequently, a spokesperson for Tinubu acknowledged the possibility of mismanagement in the disbursement process. He indicated that Tinubu would implement a bottom-up approach to ensure transparency and accountability.

Ajuri also criticized organized labor for making sweeping statements about state governors’ incompetence in distributing palliatives. He urged labor to avoid generalizations, noting that not all state governors are equally competent or underperforming.

The Special Adviser emphasized the importance of trusting state governors in the palliative distribution process. He encouraged Nigerians to have faith in the elected officials’ ability to fulfill their responsibilities.

However, Ajuri acknowledged that skepticism is understandable given the history of maladministration in the country.
