BREAKING: Tinubu Speaks On Lifting Sanctions Imposed On Niger (DETAILS)

President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has stated that the socio-economic sanctions imposed on Niger Republic will not be lifted unless there are positive adjustments made by the military junta.

He emphasized that diplomatic efforts would be fully exhausted before considering any military intervention, reaffirming that the forceful removal of a democratic government is entirely unacceptable.

During a meeting with the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, President Tinubu expressed his concerns. He pointed out that the option of kinetic intervention had not been discarded and discussed the potential risks of inaction.

President Tinubu referred to the successful nine-month transition program Nigeria implemented under General Abdulsalami Abubakar in 1998, leading to democratic governance.

He expressed optimism that a similar approach could work for Niger if the military authorities were sincere in their intentions.

The President acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidies but assured that ongoing reforms would ultimately lead to economic liberation, benefiting the majority of the population in terms of opportunities, infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

He also revealed that discussions were underway with state governments to allocate land for comprehensive animal husbandry and agro-allied production facilities, with the aim of boosting job creation and exports. The President committed to addressing healthcare needs and highlighted the allocation of funds to support the rebuilding of lives and property in the North West and North East regions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima also contributed to the meeting, stating that the President had allocated N50 billion to support ongoing reconstruction efforts in these regions, focusing on dialogue to tackle security challenges. The Sultan of Sokoto pledged his full loyalty to the President and assured him of the NSCIA’s support in achieving the nation’s goals. He called for thorough monitoring and augmentation of palliative distribution across the country to ensure its effectiveness.

The Sultan of Sokoto concluded by expressing his belief that the nation would emerge from its challenges stronger.
