The Abia State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia has ruled against the petition filed by Okey Ahiwe, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the election of Alex Otti as the governor of the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Mr. Otti, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), as the winner of the governorship election held on March 18 in the state. He secured 175,466 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Mr. Ahiwe of the PDP, who garnered 88,529 votes.

However, both Mr. Ahiwe and his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Ikechi Emenike, contested the victory separately at the tribunal. They argued that Mr. Otti was not qualified to run for the election as he wasn’t a member of the LP at the time of the exercise. They also alleged irregularities in the voting process and that Mr. Otti did not secure the majority of lawful votes.

Following the judgment delivered on Friday, a three-member panel of judges dismissed all petitions filed by Mr. Ahiwe and the PDP against Mr. Otti, citing a lack of merit. The court adjourned for 10 minutes to proceed with the petition filed by the APC candidate, Mr. Emenike, against Mr. Otti.

Chukwuemeka Nworgu, the counsel to Mr. Ahiwe and the PDP, requested a copy of the judgment from the tribunal to facilitate their decision on the next steps to take.
