The Rivers State House of Assembly was plunged into a fresh crisis on Monday, as lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Additionally, the House removed its leader, Edison Ehie, due to alleged involvement in the burning of the Assembly Complex the previous night.

House Speaker Martins Amaewhule expressed sorrow over the alleged arson, asserting that it was orchestrated by the Government House and Ehie from Ahoada East.

During the session, three matters were brought forth: the removal of Ehie as House Leader, the impeachment of Governor Fubara, and the suspension of Ehie, along with three other lawmakers—Victor Okoh from Bonny, Goodboy Sokari from Ahoada West, and Adolphus Timothy from Opobo Nkoro.

Sylvanus Nwankwo from Omuma presented the notice of impeachment, bearing the signatures of 24 members.

The governor is accused of conduct incompatible with his office.

The Speaker called for the notice of impeachment to be delivered to the governor, allowing the legal process to proceed.

The plenary was adjourned indefinitely.

Later, Fubara arrived at the Assembly Complex amid these developments. Subsequently, House members evacuated the Complex for their safety as tear gas was deployed outside.

A spontaneous protest erupted outside the Complex, with supporters of the governor opposing his potential impeachment.

It remains unclear if the fire is linked to the political turmoil, but rumors of a rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now serving as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, have been circulating for some time.
