Reason Why 2024 Budget Can’t Be Implemented – Suswam Speaks

Senator Gabriel Suswam, a former governor of Benue State, asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s proposed 2024 budget cannot be effectively executed due to its substantial N17 trillion deficit.

Tinubu had presented a N27.5 trillion budget for the 2024 fiscal year to the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Addressing 25 fellows of the Emerging Political Leaders Fellowship in Abuja on Wednesday, Suswam attributed the budgetary challenges to individuals lacking essential leadership skills occupying positions of power.

The fellowship, facilitated by The Bridge, is a year-long, non-partisan program aimed at identifying and preparing prospective political leaders, nurturing their preparedness for future leadership roles in the nation.

Expressing concern over the declining quality of representation in Nigeria, Suswam noted that, instead of improving, it is regrettably diminishing. He emphasized the necessity of intellectual substance in leadership, stating, “Leadership needs some intellectual content. If you don’t have it, there is nothing that you can do about it.”

He stated  “I was looking at the budget, out of the whole money in that budget, the deficit is N17 trillion. Because you have N9 trillion of deficit, N8 trillion of debt service, then you have N2.7 trillion of tax expenditure, that is a waiver.

“So the entire money, the N27 trillion budget is not implementable. Do you know why we have that? Because we have people in leadership with no intellectual content.”
