The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, provided an explanation for President Bola Tinubu’s absence from his speaking slot at the United Nations climate change conference in Dubai.

Tuggar stated that Nigeria is now more action-oriented and tired of official and fancy statements. He justified Tinubu’s decision not to speak, emphasizing that Nigeria is fully committed to taking action on climate change.

Tuggar clarified that the decision was rooted in a desire for substantial changes in attitude toward the conference, moving away from repetitive speeches with little progress.

He underscored the alignment of the ongoing climate change discussions with Nigeria’s 4D foreign approach, covering areas such as migration and development.

Tuggar also acknowledged the operationalization of the loss and damage fund during the conference’s initial days, a development applauded by many. He expressed optimism that Nigeria, suited to benefit from the fund, would actively engage in the climate change conversations in line with its foreign policy priorities.
