Why Sanctions On Niger Should Be Lifted – Senator Ndume

Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has advocated for the lifting of the economic sanctions imposed on Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ndume emphasized that the sanctions are causing severe hardship for ordinary citizens in both Niger and Nigeria. ECOWAS imposed the sanctions in July 2023 in response to a military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in Niger.

The sanctions include travel bans, border closures, and asset freezes on the government and its supporters.

Ndume made this appeal during a debate on the situation report presented by a Nigerien Parliament member at the ongoing ECOWAS Parliament’s Second Session in Abuja.

He said: “The sanctions are not working. They are only hurting the people of Niger. We need to find a way to resolve the political crisis in Niger, and sanctions are not the answer.”
