Why Independent, Efficient Judiciary Is Key To Human Rights – NBA

Yakubu Maikyau

On Sunday, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) emphasized the critical importance of an independent and effective judiciary for the flourishing of human rights in Nigeria.

In commemoration of this year’s International Human Rights Day and the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), NBA President Yakubu Maikyau stressed the unattainability of ‘justice for all’ without a truly independent judiciary.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All,’ encapsulated by the slogan #StandUp4HumanRights.

Amid concerns about the Nigerian judiciary’s integrity and adherence to precedents, Maikyau acknowledged the necessity for a judiciary that commands public respect and confidence.

He highlighted the crucial roles of lawyers and judges in upholding human rights, emphasizing that an independent and vibrant Bar is essential for preserving individual rights and freedoms.

Maikyau urged legal professionals to adhere to ethical standards, emphasizing that public confidence is earned through ethical conduct.

He called on lawyers to collaborate with civil societies and government officials to promote human rights, particularly offering pro bono services to victims of human rights violations, especially the indigent.

In addressing governments, Maikyau urged them to renew the social contract with the people by adopting policies aligned with sustainable development principles and focused on the well-being of citizens.

He emphasized the role of economic policies in addressing inequality, instability, and societal erosion.

Reiterating a call to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Maikyau emphasized the importance of attention to security, the economy, and the administration of justice to establish a fair and just society.
