This remarkable leap, as disclosed by NIBSS, marks a significant 54.55% year-on-year growth from N395.38 trillion recorded at the close of 2022, signaling a rapid adoption of digital payment solutions across Nigeria.

At the forefront of this cashless revolution is the NIBSS Instant Payments, a real-time inter-bank payment solution introduced in 2011, facilitating seamless fund transfers and ensuring instant value delivery to beneficiaries.

The data further reveals an astounding utilization of electronic payment channels, witnessing a remarkable 75.96% surge in transactions, with over 11.05 billion transactions conducted in 2023 compared to 6.28 billion in the previous year.

In particular, instant payments accounted for a staggering N600.36 trillion, while Point of Sale (POS) transactions reached N10.7 trillion, totaling 1.38 billion transactions, underscoring the growing reliance on cashless methods nationwide.

Notably, the surge in electronic transactions peaked during December 2023, with Nigerians collectively spending a whopping N71.9 trillion over electronic channels, reflecting increased festive season spending.

This surge, particularly evident during March 2023, aligns with a period of cash scarcity, prompting individuals to embrace electronic alternatives, further driving the momentum of cashless transactions.

Moreover, NIBSS witnessed a substantial increase in transaction volume, scaling from 5.1 billion in 2022 to an impressive 9.7 billion in 2023, marking a remarkable 90% year-on-year surge, emphasizing the growing reliance on digital payment solutions.

As the nation embraces this cashless revolution, propelled by technological advancements and changing consumer behavior, the NIBSS report underscores the pivotal role of digital payment platforms in driving financial inclusion and economic growth in Nigeria.
