Maj.-Gen. Aniedi Edet, the Director-General of DICON, disclosed this during a visit to Maj.-Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos on Tuesday.

Edet emphasized the importance of DICON’s role in meeting the defence needs of the armed forces and security agencies, highlighting ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing its operational efficiency.

“DICON, established in 1964, has resumed the production of ammunition after a hiatus. Currently, we are manufacturing a significant batch of 7.6 by 55mm rounds of ammunition and have recently supplied four million rounds to the Nigerian Army,” Edet stated.

He further noted that the recent enactment of the DICON Bill into law in November 2023 by President Bola Tinubu paved the way for the establishment of a military industrial complex, positioning DICON as a pivotal component.

“This legislation enables DICON to foster partnerships with various government agencies and organizations to address our defence needs comprehensively,” Edet added.

Acknowledging the prevailing security challenges, particularly in Plateau and surrounding regions, Edet pledged DICON’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the Nigerian Army in restoring peace.

In response, Gen. Abubakar expressed gratitude for DICON’s renewed commitment and suggested harnessing the expertise of illegal weapons manufacturers for national security purposes.

“We have seized over 300 locally-produced small arms and light weapons in recent months, and we believe there is potential to leverage this expertise for the nation’s benefit. Additionally, research and development should be prioritized,” Abubakar remarked.

Established in 1964, DICON operates ordnance factories to produce and supply arms and ammunition, while also conducting research to support the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, aligning with broader efforts to enhance national security capabilities.
