During a session held in Yola on Tuesday, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Kate Raymond, affirmed the state government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. She emphasized the importance of addressing climate change issues and acknowledged the receipt of a draft policy on climate change developed for the state by the NGO.

Accompanied by fellow members of the Committee on Environment, Raymond received the draft policy on behalf of the state lawmakers and expressed confidence in the readiness of the state government to adopt and implement the policy.

She assured that the draft policy would be presented as a bill on the floor of the House for deliberation, with the expectation of prompt passage and eventual assent by the governor.

Highlighting the governor’s consistent advocacy for environmental preservation, particularly in combatting deforestation and promoting sustainable land use practices, Raymond underscored the urgency of addressing climate change challenges in the state.

Echoing similar sentiments, climate justice advocate Mr. Akeweta Emmanuel emphasized the significance of the draft policy in helping Adamawa State mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and enhance its resilience.

Dr. Micheal David, the Executive Director of the NGO, reiterated the importance of sub-national governments in developing frameworks to protect the environment, emphasizing the need for localized policies tailored to address climate change impacts effectively.

The engagement between the state lawmakers and the NGO underscores a collaborative effort towards environmental sustainability and resilience, with a focus on developing actionable policies to safeguard Adamawa State against the impacts of climate change.
