Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), reported that the collapse occurred around 10:15 am on Thursday, February 22, 2024. Initial assessments revealed that the structure collapsed under its own weight, with no apparent external triggers.

The narrow access street posed significant challenges for emergency responders, hindering swift operations. Oke-Osanyintolu recommended the manual demolition of remaining pillars by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to clear the site efficiently.

“Public cooperation is essential to ensure the safety of the area,” he urged, emphasizing the need for bystanders to steer clear of the incident scene.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that the building was undergoing renovation at the time of the collapse. Fortunately, the construction workers managed to escape unscathed.

“Our personnel, along with other emergency responders, swiftly mobilized to the scene,” Adeseye stated, highlighting the coordinated efforts to address the situation. Despite the unknown cause of the collapse, recovery operations have been successfully completed.

The collapse serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for stringent building regulations and proactive safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. As the community grapples with the aftermath, solidarity and support from all stakeholders remain paramount in the path towards recovery.
