Sulaimon Olarewaju, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, disclosed that Governor Makinde personally ordered the closure of the facility, initially designated for battery and tire recycling but allegedly repurposed for unauthorized mining operations. The crackdown resulted in the apprehension of four individuals believed to be complicit in the illicit activities.
Unveiling the Illegal Operation
The Oyo State government revealed that the clandestine operation lacked the requisite licenses for conducting business activities within the state. Governor Makinde, during an unannounced visit to the facility in Idi Ayunre, Oluyole Local Government Area, Ibadan, highlighted preliminary findings implicating Chinese nationals in the operation.
Addressing Security Concerns
Expressing grave concerns over the lack of state oversight in mining licensing, Governor Makinde emphasized the critical security risks posed by unregulated mining activities. Despite federal authorization, the absence of state involvement raises red flags, prompting the governor to take swift action to protect the state’s interests.
Legal Ramifications and Government Intervention
Governor Makinde clarified that the facility’s operators had violated Executive Order 001 of 2024, which mandates stringent protocols for handling hazardous substances. The apprehended individuals will face legal consequences for their actions. Furthermore, the state government announced plans to assert control over the illegal premises through legal means, ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
Stay Informed, Stay Vigilant
As Governor Makinde leads the charge against illicit activities, citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Together, we can safeguard Oyo State’s resources and uphold the rule of law.
