The decision comes after last week’s unveiling of plans by the Customs service to distribute seized food items to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians amidst the country’s economic challenges.

However, the initiative, which commenced on Friday, was abruptly halted following reports of chaos and casualties at the distribution venue.

According to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), dozens of individuals gathered at the distribution site on Saturday, only to find that the program had been suspended. Armed officers were stationed both inside and outside the facility, indicating heightened security measures in response to the previous day’s events.

An unnamed Customs official confirmed the suspension to FIJ, stating that the program would remain on hold until further notice. However, no specific reason was provided for the sudden suspension.

The decision to halt the rice distribution program underscores the gravity of the situation, particularly in light of the tragic stampede incident that resulted in loss of lives.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the stampede continue, the Customs Service is faced with the challenge of ensuring the safety and welfare of citizens while addressing the underlying issues contributing to the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians.
