See Bread Prices In Kogi As Bakers Resume Production Amidst Economic Hardship

After a four-day strike, bakers in Kogi State have resumed bread production, but with a bitter twist – increased prices across all categories and sizes of bread.

The decision to end the strike was announced by Gabriel Bamidele, Chairman of the Kogi Bakers Association, signaling a resumption of operations amidst the harsh economic realities plaguing the bakery industry in the state.

In response to the soaring costs of essential ingredients like flour, sugar, and fuel, bakers have been compelled to implement price hikes, a move aimed at sustaining their businesses amidst mounting challenges.

Effective immediately, the first three small categories/sizes of bread will incur a N50 increment, while the larger ones will see a N100 increase. This means consumers can expect to pay N150, N250, and N300 for bread sizes previously sold at N100, N200, and N250, respectively. Similarly, larger loaves that once cost N800 to N1,400 will now range from N900 to N1,500.

Explaining the rationale behind the price adjustments, Bamidele cited the exorbitant costs of flour, sugar, petrol, and engine oil, which have skyrocketed in recent times, severely impacting production costs.

The staggering increase in the prices of essential commodities, such as flour and sugar, has further exacerbated the financial strain on bakers, making it increasingly challenging to sustain their operations.

Moreover, the escalating costs of distribution, coupled with inflated prices of engine oil and automobile tires, have significantly contributed to the financial burden faced by bakers across the state.

With distribution expenses soaring from N5,000 to N28,000 to N30,000, bakers are grappling with the daunting task of navigating through an economic landscape marred by unprecedented hardships.

As Bamidele aptly noted, the prevailing economic hardships have permeated every aspect of daily life, underscoring the urgent need for understanding and cooperation from the public to help sustain local businesses amidst these trying times.
