The aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-76, encountered the engine malfunction shortly after departure, leading to the tragic incident. Reports suggest that the pilot attempted to return to the Ivanovo Severny air base but was unable to do so. Instead, the plane veered off its course and crashed near a cemetery, away from residential areas.
Footage captured by an eyewitness shows flames engulfing one of the aircraft’s four turbofan engines as it passed through the sky. Despite the pilot’s efforts to maneuver the plane away from populated areas, the crash resulted in fatalities and significant damage.
The Ilyushin Il-76 is a heavy transport aircraft with a long history of service, having been introduced in 1971. With a payload capacity of 47 tons, it is capable of transporting large numbers of personnel and equipment over considerable distances. However, this tragic incident underscores the inherent risks associated with aviation operations, even for experienced military pilots.
