Senate Postpones Resumption From Recess Amidst Committee Hearings

The Nigerian Senate has deferred its resumption from recess for the second time, citing ongoing renovations and committee engagements. Initially scheduled to reconvene on April 16, 2024, the upper chamber of the National Assembly extended its recess to April 23. However, the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, announced another postponement, setting the new resumption date for April 30, 2024…..READ ALSO Senate: Former Governors Who Sponsored Bills In 10 Months (Full List)

Akubueze explained that the delay is necessary to facilitate the commencement of plenary sessions in the renovated chamber. Additionally, ongoing committee hearings, including the recent grilling of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officials over the Ways and Means and Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, have contributed to the decision to prolong the recess.

The Senate’s Committee on Media and Public Affairs responded to Senator Abdul Ningi’s letter seeking recall from his three-month suspension. Committee Chairman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, clarified that the Senate remains on Easter and Eid break, emphasizing that Ningi’s suspension was not a personal matter between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the senator but a decision involving all 109 senators.

Ningi was suspended following his allegations of budget padding against the Senate leadership, claiming a N3.7 trillion padding in the 2024 budget. Through his legal representative, Femi Falana (SAN), Ningi demanded his recall within seven days, threatening legal action on grounds of freedom of speech infringement.

As the Senate extends its recess, committee activities and internal deliberations continue, shaping the legislative agenda and responses to pressing issues within the country.
