Presidency, LP, PDP React To US 2023 General Election Report

While the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency welcomed the report, they emphasized that the party’s electoral victories did not hinge on external validation. They expressed confidence in the electoral process and affirmed their commitment to advancing Nigeria’s democracy.
In contrast, the opposition Labour Party (LP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) questioned the basis of the report’s conclusion that the election accurately reflected the will of Nigerians, citing notable irregularities and challenges observed during the polls.
The report, issued by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour within the US Department of State, highlighted concerns such as campaigning at polling stations, lack of ballot secrecy, and various irregularities during the 2023 elections. It acknowledged reports of voter suppression, intimidation, and violence, particularly in Lagos State.
In response, the PDP and LP reiterated their dedication to enhancing democracy in Nigeria, despite acknowledging imperfections in the electoral process. They emphasized the need for continued efforts to address electoral irregularities and ensure fairness and transparency in future elections.
However, the ruling APC emphasized that the elections had been conducted, contested, and resolved through legal channels, asserting that they do not require external validation. The Presidency echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had conducted a free and fair election.
Ultimately, while stakeholders hold differing perspectives on the US report, the dialogue it has sparked underscores the ongoing importance of accountability, transparency, and improvement in Nigeria’s electoral processes.
