Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the political crisis in Rivers State, terming it “extra-legal.”

According to a report by Ireporteronline, President Tinubu intervened in the crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, which resulted in a peace pact between the parties late last year.

However, Falana stated that there is no legal provision for such intervention outside the law to resolve political crises.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Falana emphasized, “The President’s intervention in the Rivers political crisis is not backed by any provision of the Constitution.”

He added, “It’s an extra-legal measure towards the restoration of law and order in that state. The President can only wish them well. If they have taken their battle to the court of law, they just have to follow through and allow the law to take its course. That is what the rule of law is about under a democratic dispensation.”

Falana stressed that there is no provision outside the law to resolve political crises, and this point needs to be made clear to those involved in the Rivers State crisis.
