Senator Ali Ndume, former Chief Whip of the Senate, has become a focal point in the ongoing political drama within the All Progressives Congress (APC). His recent remarks criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration have led to significant fallout, underscoring the tightrope of balancing personal beliefs with party loyalty in Nigerian politics.

In a formal apology, Ndume addressed the APC leadership following his public critique of President Tinubu. As reported by Channels Television, Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly, faced consequences for his outspoken comments, including his removal from the Chief Whip position. This action highlights the party’s low tolerance for public dissent among its members.

In his apology, Ndume expressed regret for not addressing his concerns through party channels first. “I accepted the mistake of not talking to the party as a last point,” Ndume admitted. Despite this, he stood by his comments, emphasizing his patriotism. “Whatever I said or did was out of patriotism. Though my words were strong, they were true,” he asserted.

The controversy began when Ndume, in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, alleged that President Tinubu was being misled by certain factions within the Presidential Villa. He claimed these elements were isolating the President from honest advisors and manipulating information. This public criticism prompted a stern response from APC leadership.

In a letter signed by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, the party reprimanded Ndume for not using internal party mechanisms to voice his concerns. The letter criticized Ndume’s approach, stating, “Senator Ndume’s failure to utilize the party’s internal mechanisms for expressing his concerns is a breach of party discipline.”

During a subsequent meeting with party leaders, Ndume highlighted the personal bonds within the party structure. “The national chairman is not just a national chairman to me but a father,” he noted, reflecting the personal relationships that often influence Nigerian political dynamics.
