Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a 3-1 defeat to Germany in their second group stage match at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup early Thursday morning.

Despite a strong fight, this marks the sixth time the Nigerian team has been unable to defeat their European counterparts at this level.

Germany took control in the early moments of the match, and their pressure paid off when Alara Sehitler opened the scoring in the 17th minute. The Falconets responded well after the setback but failed to capitalize on their chances to level the score before the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu equalized for Nigeria, offering hope of a comeback. However, Germany regained the upper hand 11 minutes later, with Sofie Zdebel putting them back in the lead.

As the match drew to a close, substitute Sarah Ernst sealed the victory for Germany, scoring a third goal during stoppage time.

The Falconets will now face Venezuela in their final group game on Sunday at the Estadio Olympico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, hoping for a turnaround to advance in the tournament.
