Lekki Shuts Down: Residents Take To Streets Over Persistent Power Failures

Despite multiple engagements with the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), the community, home to over 5,000 families and businesses, continues to suffer from unreliable power, disrupting daily life and hindering economic activities. The protestors demanded urgent intervention from the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), the Lagos State Government, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to resolve the issue once and for all.

The demonstration, organized by the Lekki Conservation Estates Development Association, highlighted the severity of the power shortages, with residents claiming that the lack of reliable electricity has led to business closures and immense hardship. Over the last two and a half years, repeated meetings with EKEDC have yielded little to no improvement, leaving residents in the dark for hours or even days. The community is calling for a dedicated power line and the energizing of a new transformer recently installed by TCN, stressing that they pay for power in advance and are entitled to consistent supply. With businesses crumbling and everyday life disrupted, the people of Lekki are demanding immediate action to put an end to their electricity woes.
