Dangote’s Steel Dreams Revived: A Cleric’s Plea Sparks New Hope
On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, a surprising moment unfolded at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. During a service celebrating elder statesman Mr. Frank Abiodun Aig-Imoukhuede’s 90th birthday, Venerable Folorunso..Dangote’s Steel Dreams Revived: A Cleric’s Plea Sparks New Hope
Oreoluwa Agbelusi, the presiding cleric, interrupted his sermon to address business mogul Aliko Dangote directly. The vicar’s impassioned plea urged Dangote to reconsider his decision to abandon his investments in Nigeria, particularly in the steel sector.
“Brother Alhaji Aliko Dangote, we plead with you to return to the vision you have for Nigeria,” Vicar Agbelusi passionately stated. “Your investments are beyond just this generation. Nigeria needs your contributions.”
The congregation, including prominent figures such as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Zenith Bank Chairman Jim Ovia, were taken aback by the unexpected appeal. Dangote, visibly moved, nodded in response to the plea.
This moment comes after Dangote’s recent frustrations with government hurdles in his efforts to operationalize his $20 billion refinery and petrochemical complex. His decision to pause investments in steel was driven by similar regulatory challenges and the country’s apparent disregard for his ventures. Despite these setbacks, the cleric’s call for national cooperation highlights the desperate need for visionary leaders like Dangote to step in and drive economic progress.
The discussion surrounding Nigeria’s stunted steel industry has long been a critical concern. With the Ajaokuta Steel Complex abandoned since the 1980s, the nation continues to import steel worth billions annually, despite having the potential for local production.
“The government must prioritize local production to reduce dependency on imports and stabilize the economy,” said Minister of Steel, Shuaibu Audu, echoing the sentiments of many stakeholders.
While the cleric’s appeal resonated deeply, it remains to be seen whether Dangote will shift his stance. However, his contributions remain vital for the nation’s industrial growth and economic stability.
