Abure Aims To Resolve Labour Party Crisis Before 2027 Elections

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has expressed confidence in resolving the party’s ongoing internal conflicts well ahead of the 2027 general elections…READ MORE…

Speaking on Wednesday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, where INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, met with political party leaders, Abure pledged to reconcile with aggrieved party members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the 2023 LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Abure dismissed rumors of a rift with Obi and Otti, describing the disagreements within the party as minor family issues. His remarks followed last Friday’s Court of Appeal ruling, which recognized him as the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party, nullifying the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee backed by the Obi-Otti faction.

A statement by LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, quoted Abure as saying, “Our disagreements have been exaggerated and should be seen as internal family matters. I am open to reconciliation with all aggrieved members to unify the party and move forward in the interest of Nigeria.”

Abure emphasized that such conflicts are common in political parties and can ultimately strengthen democracy. “Every political party experiences internal wrangling due to conflicting interests. What matters is how we manage these differences and emerge stronger,” he said.

The Labour Party’s internal crisis escalated when the Usman-led caretaker committee announced plans to appeal the Court of Appeal judgment at the Supreme Court, further prolonging the dispute.

Abure, however, remained optimistic, stating, “I believe we will soon put our differences aside, speak with one voice, and position the Labour Party as a stronger and more effective political force.”

The chairman also highlighted the importance of party unity to prepare for the 2027 elections, urging all members to prioritize the interests of the party and the nation. “Now is the time to reshape the party, address our weaknesses, and build on our strengths for future electoral success,” he added.

The reconciliation efforts mark a significant move to mend fences within the Labour Party amid ongoing legal battles and internal disagreements.
