This follows Obasa’s declaration on Saturday, during a meeting with his supporters after returning from the United States, that his removal did not adhere to due process.

In response, the Assembly released a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode, reiterating their support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and affirming the legitimacy of Obasa’s impeachment on January 13.

“More than two-thirds of the Assembly members are firmly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda,” the statement declared. “The decision to impeach Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa stands, and we will defend this decision resolutely.”

The lawmakers emphasized their commitment to good governance and peaceful collaboration with other arms of government, stressing that their actions were in line with constitutional provisions.

“All members represent various constituencies across the state and hold the undeniable right to remove principal officers, including the Speaker, under statutory regulations,” Olukayode said.

The Assembly criticized Obasa’s recent stance, labeling it as “unnecessary and unparliamentary,” and urged him to prioritize peace and harmony in the state’s best interest.

“We urge the former Speaker to embrace peace, as any attempt to incite tension will be met with firm resistance by the majority who elected Rt. Hon. Meranda,” the statement concluded.

Obasa was removed following allegations of misconduct and mismanagement, but he maintains that his impeachment lacked due process.
