Stop Taking Credit! Edo Lawmaker Slams Police Over False Rescue Claims

Inegbeboh Eugene, the representative of Igueben Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, has criticized the Edo State Police Command and other civilian security groups for taking credit for the release of the Onogie of Udo-Eguare Kingdom, Friday Ehizojie, from kidnappers…….READ MORE

According to Ireporteronline, the monarch was abducted along a forest path between Ubiaja and Udo communities after being ambushed by armed men. Days after the incident, the police announced that their operatives had successfully rescued the monarch unharmed, acknowledging the support of vigilantes, hunters, and local residents.

However, during a session at the State Assembly on Monday, Eugene refuted the police’s claims, asserting that the monarch’s release was secured through a ransom paid by the community, not through any rescue effort by security agencies.

“Mr. Speaker, during this difficult period, I personally informed the security agencies about the kidnapping of our traditional ruler. However, they did nothing substantial to secure his release,” Eugene stated. “In fact, they pretended to be making efforts, but in reality, nothing was done. The monarch’s return was entirely due to the ransom raised by the community, yet the police are now claiming credit.”

Eugene further questioned the legitimacy of the police’s claim. “How can you say you rescued someone from kidnappers without arresting the culprits? If the police know who the kidnappers are, they should reveal them,” he added.

The lawmaker expressed gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo for his quick intervention and logistical support for security agencies during the crisis. He also urged the Speaker to summon the new Commander of the State Security Corps to provide updates on measures being taken to address security issues in Edo State.
