In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Kayode Adegoke, the Commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, emphasized the importance of data security and integrity.
“The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) wishes to clarify that to ensure the security and integrity of your National Identification Number (NIN) data, modifications should only be carried out through the official NIMC self-service portal: selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng,” the statement read.
Adegoke cautioned the public against using unauthorized websites for NIN modifications, warning that such actions could compromise personal information and expose individuals to identity theft.
He assured Nigerians that updating their details via the official portal guarantees secure data handling and offers the convenience of making modifications from any location at any time.
As of November 22, 2024, NIMC reported that 115 million Nigerians had registered for NIN, reflecting a 13.6% increase from the 110 million recorded in September 2024. Additionally, on January 14, the Commission granted the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) a license to register inmates for NIN across 252 custodial centers nationwide.
NIMC reiterated its commitment to enhancing data security and urged citizens to remain vigilant against unauthorized platforms attempting to process NIN modifications.
