In an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai extended an open invitation to opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governors Peter Obi, Chibuike Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, to unite under the SDP ahead of the 2027 elections. His call suggests the possibility of an opposition coalition to challenge the ruling government.

El-Rufai expressed disillusionment with the current administration, despite initially supporting it due to his belief in President Tinubu’s potential to replicate his success in Lagos on a national scale. However, he now believes that the administration has failed to deliver.

El-Rufai also addressed accusations of betrayal towards Atiku Abubakar. He clarified that his relationship with Atiku was rooted in professional work, not politics, and emphasized that his criticisms were based on merit. He further noted that his actions with both Atiku and Buhari were based on principle, not political allegiance.
