Tension Grips Sokoto as Fears of Retaliation Mount Over Uromi Killings
Heightened tension has gripped Sokoto State following the killing of 16 Hausa hunters in Uromi, Edo State—an incident allegedly carried out by local vigilantes and youths.
The killings, which occurred last Thursday, have triggered widespread fear of potential retaliatory attacks in northern Nigeria. As a result, parts of Sokoto, especially the metropolis, have experienced noticeable shutdowns and public anxiety.
On Friday, Daily Post observed an atmosphere of unease across major areas such as Bello Way, Emir Yahya Road, Sahara, and Aliyu Jodi, where numerous shops remained closed and the streets were largely deserted.
While initial reports speculated that only shops owned by Igbos were targeted for closure, local POS operator and spare parts dealer, Buhari Haruna Illelah, clarified otherwise. He told Daily Post that the lockdown directive came from the police, not mobs or youth groups.
“The police came and told us to shut down our shops and go home. I didn’t see any armed youths, but I’m now indoors because of what we heard—there might be attacks,” Illelah said.
According to him, the closure was a precautionary measure in response to security warnings about possible attacks by unidentified youths.
The Sokoto State Police Command has reportedly increased security presence across the city, as authorities work to prevent any outbreak of violence. Civil society organizations and community leaders have joined in calls for calm and restraint, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice through legal and peaceful means.
As of the time of reporting, no violence or protests had been officially recorded in Sokoto, but residents continue to remain on edge as they await further developments.
