Pro-Wike Rivers State Legislators Participate In Legislative Training In the UK
A cohort of legislators from the Rivers State House of Assembly, aligned with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, has initiated a five-day legislative training program in the United Kingdom. Commencing on Friday, the program aims to enhance their understanding of governance and legislative processes, specifically focusing on “Legislative Dynamics in Presidential and Parliamentary Systems.”
The training program began in Central London, where the lawmakers engaged in various discussions and workshops designed to refine their legislative skills. According to Naija News, the objective of this program is to deepen their grasp of the complexities of the legislative process, preparing them to better serve the people of Rivers State upon their return.
On Saturday, the delegation, led by Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, undertook an agricultural excursion to study innovative farming practices in England. This excursion aims to familiarize the lawmakers with modern agricultural methods that could enhance productivity in Rivers State.
Nkemjika Ezekwe, the representative of Onelga Constituency II, commented on the trip, noting the valuable insights gained regarding contemporary farming techniques. She expressed that this experience would aid them in making well-informed decisions concerning agricultural policies.
Ezekwe stated, “The speaker emphasized that our second day of training provided us with significant opportunities and insights into innovative practices that can be applied to enhance the agricultural sector. Learning from farms in more developed agricultural regions enables legislators and agricultural stakeholders to adopt advanced techniques, technologies, and sustainable farming practices suited to local conditions.
“This exposure helps bridge the divide between traditional farming and modern agricultural practices, empowering us to make informed decisions that promote growth in the sector. Additionally, such visits offer first-hand knowledge of the global food supply chain, along with its challenges and opportunities, enhancing our ability to create legislation addressing issues such as food security, rural development, and environmental sustainability.
“The speaker further noted that witnessing effective livestock management, precision farming, or agro-processing can inspire policies that encourage the adoption of such innovations in our state. He highlighted that today’s visit to the agricultural farm aims to foster a knowledge exchange beneficial to both local farmers and the legislative framework. By broadening our understanding and perspectives, lawmakers can develop policies that address not only today’s unique challenges but also future developments.”
This training occurs against the backdrop of President Bola Tinubu’s recent suspension of the lawmakers and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the need for improved governance and peace.
