According to Ireporter Online, ace music producer and record label boss, Don Jazzy, has revealed the inspiration behind discovering and signing Afrobeats star Ayra Starr to Mavin Records. Speaking during an interview on the Echo Room podcast, the Mavin founder explained that his decision was driven by the need to fill a noticeable gap in the Nigerian music industry — the absence of a teenage Afrobeats superstar.

Don Jazzy disclosed that in his quest to find new talent, he enlisted the help of young people in universities to identify promising singers within their circles. Among the names suggested, Ayra Starr’s Instagram page stood out. He recounted that what truly captured his attention was a freestyle video Ayra Starr posted about drug abuse, a theme he noted was deeply relevant to the Gen Z audience.

He revealed that the performance struck him as intentional and refreshing, convincing him that Ayra Starr was the unique talent he had been searching for. “I felt the industry needed it. There was a space for a young teenage Afrobeats superstar from Nigeria, and I wanted to make sure it became global. So it was very intentional,” he stated.

Don Jazzy explained how he personally reached out to Ayra via Instagram after seeing her freestyle, though she did not respond immediately. Not giving up, he eventually reached out to her brother, after noticing him in one of her posts, to establish contact. That persistence eventually led to her signing with Mavin Records, a move that has since positioned Ayra Starr as one of Africa’s fastest-rising global music sensations.
