“APC Slams Opposition: #FreeNnamdiKanu Protests A Plot To Destabilise Nigeria”

According to Ireporter Online, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused opposition politicians of orchestrating the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protests, describing them as politically motivated actions designed to incite unrest and destabilise the country.

The party’s spokesperson, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, in a statement released on Monday, characterised the demonstrations as “a dangerous display of reckless politics,” asserting that the protests were driven by “political frustration” rather than a genuine demand for justice.

“This so-called protest is not about justice; it is about political frustration,” Oladejo stated, describing the demonstrations as “the height of bitter and destructive politics” aimed at gaining cheap relevance after electoral defeat.

Drawing a biblical analogy, the APC spokesman likened the current agitation to “the hand of Jacob but the voice of Esau,” accusing opposition figures of deceitfully manipulating the public under the guise of activism. He warned that “those who were rejected at the polls” would not regain power through street protests.

Oladejo further criticised the organisers for their alleged insensitivity to the hardship suffered by residents in the South-East, a region he said had endured years of violence, economic stagnation, and fear caused by separatist agitations and enforced sit-at-home orders.

“At a time when the South-East is still bleeding from years of mindless bloodshed, kidnappings, and economic paralysis, these individuals have chosen to mock the memories of the victims,” he said. “They ignore the tears of widows, the pains of orphans, and the devastation of communities torn apart by senseless violence.”

He accused the protest organisers of exploiting the people’s pain for political gain instead of working to rebuild their region, describing them as “political opportunists fanning the embers of division.”

The APC reiterated that Nnamdi Kanu’s case remains a judicial matter before a competent court and cautioned against attempts to influence the legal process through street demonstrations or public pressure.

“No one is above the law. Nigeria’s judiciary is competent, independent, and capable of delivering justice without resorting to mob pressure or street intimidation,” the statement added.

Oladejo also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that it has fostered inclusivity, restored investor confidence, and advanced infrastructural development across all regions, including the South-East.

“The administration has shown remarkable inclusivity. True progress will not come from chaos, but through cooperation, dialogue, and peace,” he emphasised.

The Lagos APC urged security agencies to remain vigilant and called on citizens, particularly leaders in the South-East, to reject what it termed “the antics of those who thrive on political bitterness.”

“There must be a limit to destructive politics,” Oladejo said. “Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must not allow political desperation to tear it apart.”

Reports indicate that the #FreeNnamdiKanu protests erupted following renewed demands by civil society groups and pro-Biafra supporters for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been detained since 2021 on charges bordering on treasonable felony. The demonstrations, which spread across major cities, have prompted heightened security alerts from national authorities.
