Lagos Urges Residents To Stay Indoors As May Sanitation Exercise Begins
The Lagos State Government has called on residents to remain indoors and fully participate in the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, May 30, between 6:30 am and 8:30 am across the state.
According to Ireporter Online, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the appeal in a statement released on Thursday night, commending residents for their strong participation during the April edition of the exercise. He emphasized that environmental cleanliness remains vital to public health and sustainable urban development.
Wahab urged Lagosians to utilize the two-hour window to clean their homes, surroundings, drainage channels, and public spaces, noting that the sanitation programme has become a permanent fixture in the state’s environmental policy.
He further disclosed that the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, will lead a government delegation to monitor compliance in Alimosho Local Government Area, while the Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will oversee activities in Apapa Local Government Area. He added that officials across all 57 local government and local council development areas will be deployed to ensure strict monitoring and enforcement.
The commissioner stated that adequate compactor trucks have been positioned across the state for prompt evacuation of waste generated during and after the exercise, urging residents to embrace the initiative and cultivate a sustained culture of cleanliness.
Wahab also cautioned against the use of illegal cart pushers for waste disposal, noting that Private Sector Participation operators have been expanded to improve coverage across communities. He warned that residents who fail to comply with the sanitation directive risk receiving abatement notices and possible prosecution.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to a cleaner and flood-free Lagos, he advised residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
