ADC To Amaechi: No Need To Announce VP Nomination Acceptance

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed that former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, remains its vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election, dismissing concerns over his failure to publicly acknowledge the nomination.

According to Ireporter Online, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, maintained that there is no requirement for Amaechi to make a public declaration accepting the position, stressing that the party’s announcement was sufficient confirmation of his status.

Abdullahi made the clarification during a television interview while responding to growing speculation among supporters regarding Amaechi’s silence since the party unveiled him as its running mate. He argued that political parties are responsible for announcing such decisions and that the necessary consultations would have taken place before any official declaration was made.

The ADC spokesman noted that it would be unusual for a candidate to publicly issue a separate acceptance statement after a party has formally nominated and announced them. He further stated that the absence of any denial from Amaechi should be viewed as evidence that there is no disagreement over the nomination.

While declining to disclose details of the internal discussions that preceded the decision, Abdullahi insisted that the party followed due process in selecting Amaechi for the role. He emphasized that the nomination was the outcome of an established internal process and reflected the party’s collective decision.

He also disclosed that both the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Amaechi would be formally presented to Nigerians at the appropriate time, noting that the campaign season had yet to begin and that there was no urgency for such an unveiling.

Abdullahi further used the opportunity to highlight the ADC’s commitment to institutional democracy, stating that the party prioritizes its structures and processes over individual personalities. He added that the ADC remains proud of conducting what it described as a nationwide internal election involving members across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, a feat he claimed distinguishes the party from its competitors.
