Sowore Breaks Silence After Kuje Prison Release
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that his recent incarceration will not deter him from continuing his campaign for justice and accountability in Nigeria.
Speaking shortly after regaining his freedom from the Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday, Sowore maintained that imprisonment only reinforces the determination of those committed to defending justice rather than weakening their resolve.
In a message shared via his account, the activist insisted that the struggle for a better Nigeria would continue, stressing that he and his supporters would never give up on their cause.
His release followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which admitted him to bail in the sum of ₦200 million. The court directed that he provide two sureties, including a traditional ruler from his community and a property owner within the Federal Capital Territory. The court also ordered him to surrender his international passport to the court registrar pending the conclusion of the trial.
Sowore is facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a two-count charge linked to social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” on his and Facebook accounts.
He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The court had earlier revoked his bail on June 16 after he failed to appear for proceedings and subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest. Following his arrest, he was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre while the court considered his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
