Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal are set to meet on football’s grandest stage for the first time as Argentina prepare to face Spain in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, marking a remarkable moment nearly two decades after their first, unexpected encounter.

Monfort also recalled that Messi appeared shy and uncertain at first when asked to pose with a baby but quickly adapted to the situation, praising the football legend’s professionalism throughout the photoshoot.

Yamal’s rise has been equally inspiring. Born to Moroccan-born Mounir Nasraoui and Equatorial Guinean Sheila Ebana, he was raised in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood near Barcelona. His first names were chosen in honour of two individuals who supported his family financially during difficult times, while his signature goal celebration pays tribute to his hometown by referencing its postcode.

The teenage sensation has often spoken about the sacrifices his parents made to help him pursue football despite financial hardship, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout his journey.

By the age of 19, Yamal had already amassed 56 career goals, won three La Liga titles, lifted the Copa del Rey and played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. At the same age, Messi had won one La Liga title and a UEFA Champions League trophy while scoring 11 senior goals before embarking on one of the greatest careers in football history.

As Argentina and Spain prepare for the World Cup final, Monfort believes the upcoming encounter represents a fitting conclusion to a story that began with a simple charity photograph nearly two decades ago. While he expressed hope that Messi could crown his illustrious career with another World Cup title, he also acknowledged that Yamal has the potential to achieve similar greatness in the years ahead.
