The opposition coalition summit held in Abuja on Monday without some of the prominent political figures expected to participate in the meeting ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those absent were former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi; and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

According to Ireporter Online, the meeting, which took place at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, attracted several other political figures, including Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Musa Daura.

Representatives of the participating political parties, including members of their National Working Committees and Boards of Trustees, were also present at the gathering.

The summit brought together representatives of six opposition parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Addressing the gathering on behalf of the G100, former APC chieftain Salihu Lukman presented a proposed framework for cooperation among the opposition parties, with the ultimate objective of establishing what he described as a Government of National Competence.

Lukman said the proposed arrangement should be founded on competence, integrity, national inclusion and equitable representation for all parties that participate in the coalition.

He further proposed that the government should operate for a single four-year transition period, with the commitment formally documented in an enforceable Transition Charter.

According to him, the agreement must go beyond verbal assurances, noting that previous political arrangements had failed because there were no effective mechanisms to hold participants accountable when they abandoned their commitments.

Lukman stressed that the opposition coalition must learn from past experiences by ensuring that every agreement reached during the negotiations is properly documented and backed by clear consequences for violations.

He maintained that the initiative was not merely about combining political ambitions but about creating a structured platform capable of producing a competent and inclusive government.

The G100 convener therefore urged opposition leaders to focus on building a credible political framework that would promote accountability and ensure that all participating parties remained committed to the objectives of the proposed coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
