OAU Final-Year Student Allegedly D!es by Su!cide

A final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Oluwole Seun, has reportedly died in an incident suspected to be suicide.

According to reports, the incident occurred at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife. The circumstances surrounding the student’s death remain under investigation, while the motive has not been established.

Close friends of the deceased reportedly said they had not noticed any unusual behaviour or signs that suggested he was experiencing difficulties before the incident.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Olarewaju said the university received an emergency report at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, prompting the deployment of the institution’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team to the location alongside officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the statement, the student was subsequently taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

The university management said items and information recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.

The institution also said its Student Affairs authorities had been notified to provide welfare support to students affected by the incident.

The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and classmates while urging students experiencing emotional distress, academic pressure or personal challenges to seek assistance through the university’s official support structures.

“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” Bamire said.

The university administration also urged members of the institution’s community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the police investigation is ongoing.
