Man Sets Ex-Wife Ablaze While She Was Asleep

A middle-aged man, identified only as Kuryanga, has burnt his former wife, Janet, in Guyuk town, in the Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State

It was learnt that the incident happened last Thursday.

The suspect, who was reportedly armed with petrol and a matchbox, allegedly set Janet ablaze while she was asleep.

The victim’s aunt, Noyina, who recounted the incident in Hausa, said, “It was terrifying to wake up to burning fire like a horror movie scene. More torturing was to hear my niece crying for help while she burnt in the flame.”

According to Noyina, Janet and Kuryanga ended their seven-year marriage three years ago with a court order prohibiting the suspect from seeing her.

She said, “Despite Kuryanga getting married to another lady, coupled with the court’s verdict, he still refused to let go of her, while jealously threatening her life and those of her suitors.

“When he eventually struck, he joined sympathisers at my niece’s bedside in the hospital the following day. He almost got away with it. Fortunately, his pregnant wife confirmed that an abandoned petrol container at the crime scene was their family’s belonging.

“He tiptoed to her sleeping spot in our compound in the dead of the night, poured petrol, struck the matches and fled, leaving her in flames. He got her because of the scorching hot weather; we all sleep in the open.”

Noyina said Kuryanga was arrested after the statement of his wife, adding that he later confessed to the crime and pleaded for forgiveness.
