Federal Lawmaker, Dennis Idahosa’s Motion On Food Security Elicits Applause From Nigerians

The Federal lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon Dennis Idahosa has received commendations from Nigerians over his motion on food security in Nigeria.

On Wednesday the Hosue of Representative moved to ascertain the level of food security in the country, following the adoption of a motion by Hon. Dennis Idahosa, on the floor of the House in Abuja.

The youthful lawmaker in moving the motion noted that the Agricultural sector had witnessed policy changes since vision 20:2020 was launched in 2009 and in Aug 2016.

Querying the hundreds of billions appropriated to the Agricultural sector over the years, the lawmaker faulted the output in relation to production and stated that the food security was not corresponding with the amount spent.

He said it was only imperative that Nigeria ascertains the level of food security in the country stressing that the world food summit in 1996 agreed that food security exists when all people at all times have physical and economic access.

The lawmaker insisted that there is a need to verify the current state of small-, medium- and large-scale farming in the country.

The House mandated the Committees on Agricultural Production and Services and Finance to interface with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and relevant stakeholders to ascertain the level of food security in Nigeria.

It urged them to report back within eight weeks for further legislative action.

Hon Dennis Idahosa’s motion has elicited applause from Nigerians, according to respondents growth in the agricultural sector can be at least twice as effective in reducing poverty and boosting increase in other sectors of the economy.
