Why Tinubu Can’t Be Separated From The Success Of The Lagos Blue Line Mass Transit

On Wednesday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu launched the final track beam (T-beam) of the 27-kilometer Lagos Blue Line Rail Mass Transit, heralding the start of the race to complete the Mega Mass Transit plan that will revolutionize West Africa.

With the laying of the final T-Beam, all difficult civil works standing in the way of the Lagos Blue Rail Line, which started in 2012, have been overcome.

People have disputed in numerous places regarding giving Tinubu credit for the succeeding Lagos governments that followed him; others claim that he should not be recognized because some of those projects were not completed during his reign.

Can we conclude, from a broader view, that Tinubu should not be given credit for such amazing works?

What is the essence of Governance ?

An examination of the Chinese government’s history and the reasons for its success reveals that China’s enviable position was the result of public administration consistency in governance.

Governors in China, unlike in some other countries, were selected by the central government and had a more flexible service period. We discovered, using a fixed effects model, that the longer of governance continuity of a governor, the higher level of administration efficiency of the province in China.

If we apply this to the contemporary Nigerian context of a four-year term and the possibility of reelection, it becomes clear that in order to achieve this, we need a scenario in which the ideal candidate to replace an outgoing government is one that is prepared to continue implementing the previous administration’s past policies.

And this was mirrored in Lagos, where the train line began in 2012 and was conceptualized during Tinubu’s tenure, bringing to light how this reality of today has been in the works for more than two decades.

Any organization, whether it be a private or public body, has always relied on continuity in business and governance to accomplish results. For continuity to be achieved, there must be a good correlation between planning and their execution.

The understanding that governance is a continuous process in which policies of national interest do not cease once there is a change in leadership is what developed nations have done exceptionally well.

China was not an economic super power a few years ago, but through long-term planning and concerted efforts, they are now a force to be reckoned with in global trade and have now emerged as a major player.

We at iReporteronline recently conducted a poll that focused on three demographics of people.

Senior Citizens:

Between the ages of 65 and up.

The Middle Age:

Between the ages of 40 and 65.

The young people:

In this situation, between the ages of 15 and 40.

For the elderly, all they want for their country is the best for their children and grandkids.

How the nation will fare in their old age of retirement was one of the concerns of the middle age. Youth, however, are more worried about their present and near future.

All Nigerians require is a good and sustainable administration. This absurdity of successive governments abandoning projects started by predecessors should end.

So let us all understand that Tinubu laid the groundwork for other governors to follow. And this has resulted in the later developments seen throughout Lagos. He cannot reign for more than eight years. A foresighted leader, on the other hand, will create the groundwork for future advancements. None of the other presidential candidates have shown this.

Let me close with some sensible words from former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola.

” Tinubu gave us a MASTERPLAN & Foundation with which Lagos will be developed continuously without interruption. That was the plan I followed as Lagos Governor and even my successors too. The evidence of Lagos development is glaring to all today and we are just beginning”.
