JUST IN: Jonathan Reveals Those National Honours Should Be Withdrawn From (DETAILS)

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has called for national honors to be withdrawn from people of questionable character.

Noting that awards are a means of recognizing deserving citizens, he suggested that those who no longer deserve such honors be stripped of them.

The former President advocated for legislation that would allow the federal government and states to revoke national honors and awards from recipients who were found to be lacking in character and conduct.

“Talking about awards, I want to say, probably, when we are making laws, at the federal level, there should be an amendment empowering the president or the governors to strike off such honours,” he said.

He spoke at the inaugural Ebonyi State Honors Award in Abakaliki, where he was named Grand Commander of the Ebonyi Hall of Fame (GCEHF).

Jonathan stated that his award would strengthen the centuries-old bond between Bayelsa and Ebonyi.

At the event, over 300 prominent Nigerians from across the country were honored.

The late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, was among those honored at the grand finale held Thursday night at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki.

He was posthumously awarded the GCEHF for his role in the establishment of Ebonyi State in October 1996.

Other honorees included President Mohammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambari; Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor; two former Governors of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi and Ayo Fayose; and former Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji.
