2027 Bombshell: Abure Faction Declares Labour Party Not in Any Coalition!

The faction of the Labour Party under the leadership of Julius Abure has declared that it is not participating in any political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. This declaration was made in an official statement jointly signed by Julius Abure and the party’s National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, after the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

The faction emphasized its commitment to building on the successes recorded during the 2023 general elections. According to IREPORTER ONLINE, the Abure-led group stated that the coalition formed in 2023 remained the most formidable and that their current focus is on reconciliation, rebuilding, and strategic consolidation.

The group firmly dismissed claims suggesting a leadership vacuum within the party, asserting that a National Convention was duly held in Nnewi, Anambra State, on March 27, 2024, in strict compliance with the Labour Party Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This convention, they noted, was upheld by the Supreme Court in its ruling delivered on April 4, 2025.

According to IREPORTER ONLINE, the faction called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, to uphold the Supreme Court’s verdict and other relevant legal positions concerning the party’s leadership.

In its communiqué, the Abure-led NEC categorically condemned what it described as a “purported” NEC meeting held on July 18, 2025. The group distanced itself from the outcomes of that meeting, particularly the renaming of what it termed an “illegal Caretaker Committee” established in Umuahia in 2024 as the “Interim National Working Committee.” It stressed that such rebranding of illegality does not confer legality.

Citing Article 14 (4)(B) of the Labour Party Constitution, the faction argued that only the National Secretary, with the National Chairman’s approval, has the authority to convene NEC meetings. It added that the controversial meeting also violated Section 82 (1)(2)(a) of the Electoral Act 2022. The group reiterated that the leadership structure of the party remains intact and lawfully constituted.

According to IREPORTER ONLINE, key figures present at the NEC meeting included members of the National Working Committee, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed—Labour Party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate—state chairmen, and other co-opted NEC members. The group vowed to protect the integrity of the Labour Party from illegal maneuvers and called for national unity within the party ranks.
