The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has spoken out in support of Nigeria’s former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, following criticism over her recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

The youth arm of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization dismissed the backlash against Patience Jonathan as unwarranted and baseless, noting that her declaration that she has no interest in returning to the presidential villa has triggered unnecessary outrage from some Nigerians.

Responding to the criticisms in a statement released on Monday, and jointly signed by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, and National Secretary, Comrade Obinna Achionye, the council defended her right to support any political candidate of her choosing.

“It is entirely within the constitutional rights of the former First Lady, like every Nigerian, to endorse or support any political figure,” the statement affirmed.

The group emphasized that freedom of political association is protected both by the Nigerian Constitution and by universal natural rights, and Dame Patience Jonathan was simply exercising that right.

“Anyone uncomfortable with her decision is equally free to support their preferred candidate,” they said, calling for mutual respect in the democratic process.

The council further urged critics to stop the personal attacks and recognize Dame Patience’s legacy as one of Nigeria’s most compassionate and impactful First Ladies.

“She has consistently shown genuine concern for the wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians. Her widespread popularity across the country remains evident, even long after leaving office,” the youth leaders stated.

In closing, the council challenged those opposing her political views to be open about their own affiliations rather than vilifying her for hers.

“Let her critics be bold enough to reveal the candidates they are backing instead of launching baseless attacks on her choice,” the statement concluded
