Abuja On Alert: Police Respond To NLC’s Planned Strike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to consider rescheduling its planned protest in support of striking Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, intelligence reports indicate that members of the Shiite Islamic Sect and other non-state actors may attempt to infiltrate the demonstration and provoke violence. The Police appealed to the NLC to postpone the protest to a later date in order to safeguard public peace and security.

The statement emphasized that the request is intended to prevent any breakdown of law and order while ensuring the safety, freedom of movement, and daily activities of other residents are not disrupted. SP Adeh stated, “While the FCT Police Command respects the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, intelligence reports indicate potential attempts by proscribed groups and other actors to hijack the protest for purposes contrary to public safety. We therefore appeal to the organizers to consider rescheduling the activity in the interest of public safety.”

The Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property and called on citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace.

The NLC, together with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had earlier announced plans to stage a solidarity rally on February 3 to support JUAC, which is leading an indefinite strike by FCDA workers over unpaid salaries. The unions made the announcement in a joint statement signed by NLC General Secretary Benson Upah and TUC Secretary General Nuhu Toro.
