Adasobo Festival: Inside Kishi Where Hunters Showcase Bravery, Heritage And Unity In Colourful Celebration

The festival, which attracts sons and daughters of the town from across Nigeria and the diaspora, is characterised by traditional rites, symbolic performances, and communal gatherings that reflect the rich heritage of the Kishi people.

During a visit to the community on April 20, 2026, it was observed that the palace of the Iba of Kishi and Ansarudeen School, two central venues located near the town’s market, were filled with activity as chiefs, elders, and residents turned out in vibrant traditional attire to witness the ceremonies and pay homage to the monarch.

Seated in royal dignity, the Iba of Kishi received tributes from chiefs and subjects in line with longstanding customs, while the palace courtyard resonated with drumming, chanting, and cultural performances from various groups entertaining the gathering.

Traditional leaders described the Adasobo Festival as a unifying cultural institution that strengthens communal bonds and reinforces ancestral identity. The Laha of Kishi land, Dr Yusuf Adeleke Ibrahim, explained that the festival remains a symbolic annual tradition in honour of the monarch and the community’s heritage.

He noted that a key aspect of the celebration involves hunters going into nearby forests to hunt animals, which are later presented before the Iba and taken to the Adasobo mountain behind the palace for traditional rites. He emphasized that the festival is not only celebratory but also a reminder of the people’s roots and shared identity.

Another chief added that the festival plays a vital role in reconnecting younger generations with their cultural heritage, especially at a time when many youths are drifting away from traditional values.

A major highlight of the event was the return of local hunters from the forest, who arrived with their game to the cheers of residents lining the streets. The display of hunted animals symbolised courage, skill, and the community’s historical reliance on hunting as a way of life.

Community leaders noted that the hunters’ return remains one of the most anticipated moments of the festival, drawing excitement and participation from all age groups.

Beyond cultural expressions, the festival also boosted economic activity in the town, as traders, food vendors, and artisans recorded increased patronage amid the influx of visitors. Streets were filled with music, laughter, and emotional reunions as families and friends reconnected during the celebration.

Dr Ibrahim further disclosed that the grand finale of the Adasobo Festival is scheduled for Saturday, with neighbouring communities and dignitaries expected to attend. The final day is anticipated to feature more elaborate cultural displays and attract a larger crowd.

Residents expressed excitement ahead of the grand finale, describing the festival as a growing spectacle that continues to showcase Kishi’s cultural pride.
