Victor Osimhen stands as a strong contender for the 2023 African Footballer of the Year, aiming to break a 24-year-old streak.

Osimhen’s outstanding 2022–2023 season with Napoli, leading them to their first Serie A title in 33 years, has positioned him as a frontrunner.

His remarkable achievements include ranking eighth in the 2023 Ballon d’Or Awards, marking the first time a Nigerian has entered the top ten of this prestigious accolade.

The 24-year-old striker, holding the record for the most goals scored by an African in a single Serie A season, aims to become Nigeria’s first recipient of the award since Nwankwo Kanu 24 years ago.

Kanu, the last Nigerian to receive the honor, achieved it after scoring 17 goals for Arsenal, including a memorable hat-trick against Chelsea in October 1999.

Salah, a runner-up last year, is joined by Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, a key player in Morocco’s historic World Cup semi-final progression.
