Akpabio, Abbas, And Bamidele Urge Nigerians To Embrace Hope In The New Year

As Nigerians welcomed the New Year, top political leaders urged citizens to embrace hope, unity, and resilience in 2026. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen called on Nigerians to remain optimistic, assuring that the National Assembly would uphold its legislative responsibilities.

In his New Year message, Akpabio expressed confidence that the country would experience steady progress, driven by strong institutions and accountable leadership. He emphasized the Senate’s continued commitment to law-making, representation, and oversight to strengthen democratic governance and national development. Akpabio also commended Nigerians for their resilience and civic maturity amid economic and social challenges, while cautioning against divisive politics and misleading narratives as the nation approaches the next general elections.

Speaker Abbas echoed the call for hope and perseverance, describing 2026 as a year of opportunity and possibility. He reaffirmed the Legislature’s dedication to enacting people-focused laws aimed at economic stability, inclusiveness, and national security, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele encouraged Nigerians to approach the year with strength despite anticipated challenges, noting that the country is on the path to full economic recovery following extensive legislative reforms. He defended recent tax laws, stating they were designed to address long-standing fiscal distortions rather than burden ordinary citizens.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu urged citizens to prioritize peace, empathy, unity, and investments in the welfare of children, women, and vulnerable groups, stressing that national progress depends on collective compassion.

Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State described 2026 as a year of “quantum leap,” highlighting the administration’s ongoing efforts and calling for optimism and unity. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki also stressed that national unity remains essential for harnessing Nigeria’s potential, urging citizens to avoid actions that could divide the country.

On labor matters, the Nigeria Labour Congress demanded an immediate wage review to counter inflation and emphasized the importance of security for citizens. NLC President Joe Ajaero encouraged workers to unite and leverage their collective power to drive national progress.

In addition, Kwara State Government advised residents to avoid non-essential movements and large gatherings due to potential security threats, assuring continued protection from security agencies. Lagos East Senator Mukhail Abiru called for dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect, highlighting opportunities to consolidate progress and empower the nation’s youth.
